Wargame Armies : Ancient and Medieval

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Wargame army units based on the standard frontage of 40mm (DBX). showing generic mannaquin figures for over 50 different unit types to cover the period 3000 BC to 1450 AD.

In addition the set includes counters for camps and villages, and terrain sheets which can be mounted and cut to the sizes required by the player's rules for woods, rough, fields, hills Etc.

Counters will never replace the look of actual figures, but they can be used to 'play around' with new rules to work out the mechanisms, to try new armies before you buy the figures, or when figures / time are not available.

i have a question. Are there two sides in this set. Because i want to make a battle game and there should be a thing that marks which player own that unit.

There are a single set of counters - the range of troops is large. Each Counter has a white circle in which you can either add a colour or number for units / sides Etc. So sides and units are catered for.

Sorry missed this note originally. Since creating the units I have (after requests) added a few more sheets of different troop types. If you download again you can view the full set before selecting which sheets to print.

AT the request of gamers I have have added three extra sheets of different figures/ configurations. The requested ACW set has been uploaded - This is available seperately.

I am working on ECW/ Thirty Years War next and then Colonial.

Napoleonics have been requested, and I will get to this in the future- that requires some thought so that I can keep my generic concept whilst still providing representative uniforms. Thank you all for the interest, comments and of course the sales. Much appreciated.

Will the Colonial figures include the AWI and/or the French & Indian War?

Great news on the new sets! For the ECW/Thirty Years War, I would ask that that the Horse Units have six figures; most foot units, especially pike formations, should have twelve figures, but some foot, like forlorn hopes, commanded shot, etc. should also have six figures. I make the aforementioned requests based upon Osprey's "The Pikeman's Lament." Also, if you could somehow differentiate between units, such as with red or blue badges, that would help. The same differentiation would also be nice in the Ancient & Medieval Wargame Counters since, unlike with the ACW, both sides' units appear the same. If you need any suggestions for the Colonial counters, let me know as Osprey's "The Men Who Would Be Kings" is an excellent and popular rules set.

I am actually going to do different coloured uniforms for the ECW set. I note the bases/ figures requirement.

I hate to rush you, but do you have a time frame for the release of the ECW/Thirty Years War set? What will be the dimensions of the base sizes? I really think you are doing a great service for board wargamers who may want to try out some of the great miniature rules sets recently published without spending a fortune in time or money in acquiring the necessary units for the game. Of course, this particular product will allow you to play everything from old school DBA to Osprey's recently released "Men of Bronze."

Not entirely sure. Probably a couple of months, as I fit this around work, family, training a new puppy and supporting elderly parents.

Having said that I have taken note of requests and I am doing a range of bases to fit the various current rules, and this period does warrant uniform colours, so I am going to do New Model Army colours and probably three others for variety. (Plus the usual round white corner circle where users can add a colour, letter or number to indicate sides or units).

The response, advice and interaction on these counters has been much appreciated.

These look very interesting but I have to say from looking at the preview, more work should have gone into them because they could have been very useful. For instance, if swordsmen, then why not accentuate the swords dramatically? Why make them look like sticks? I think the whole set should be redone and the artist should move on to doing much more look-down art. BTW, I prefer LDA to standup paper because standup figures in paper look invisible from the opposite direction of their pose. If an artist were to make paper wrap art so people could apply them to cubes (or tall square columns that is), THAT would be the best.

I am afraid that what you suggest was never the intention. These are, and were always intended to be mannequin style figures in counter format so the are generic rather than graphic representations of miniatures. You would, I am afraid, have to look elsewhere for the sort of counter you describe.

Love this! A few tweaks I'd love to see:

- Fix spelling of "javelin"
- Add 4Bw (4 figure bow, shallow base)
- Add foot generals

Thoughts?

I have corrected the Javelin spelling (I have for many years been under the delusion that this could be spelt either way). i have also uploaded additional sheets with Auxilia (same as some other bases but the title has been changed), warband, and I drawn some additional bow counters with 4 figures, double based deep bow counters, and foot generals.

At the request of a fellow gamer, I have added a further A4 sheet with additional counters for medium and close order troops (armoured and unarmoured) with 2 handed weapons, foot with handguns, light horse with handguns, and medieval light artillery (organ gun) and artillery (Bombard). I am very happy to add others if requested and they would be useful.

I think these counters are very useful for numerous sets of Ancients and Medieval Rules. Print these counters out; glue them to some Litko bases; and you have some very nice looking units for DBA, To the Strongest, Sword & Spear, Ancient and Medieval Warfare, Lion Rampant, etc. Combine these counters with 2d terrain, and you have a 'travel' version of these rules to take on vacation. Nevertheless, I think "Warband," "Auxiliary Infantry," "Deep Bows" and "Mob" counters would help complete the set, especially for DBx. Also, I would love to see stands of six ACW figures of Infantry and Artillery for Osprey's Rebels and Patriots along with single artillery pieces.

First of all, awesome set, I love the versatility. I will probably pick up the ACW soon as well. I do have a request if the offer still stands. I know it was not super common, but would you add mounted crossbow cavalry units & a battering ram? Thanks in advance!

Quick question/request: Is it possible to make copy of all the units and apply a color variation to all of them? for example, have a sheet of units that are red, then an exact same copy that are blue? That way they are easily distinguished between enemy troops.

Alas no. Each limb or body component is a graphic element. They are coloured to represent leather / cloth / armour etc.
In addition larger elements are shaded. They do not work as a single layer for colouring purposes.

I have included a white circle in the counters which can be coloured, or you can cut and paste into Word of Open Office and add coloured circles over the white ones to define units or sides.

I hope this helps.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
